For deer, I’ve got a Tikka T3 in .30-06, and for turkeys and upland birds, I rely on a Remington 870. When it comes to squirrels and some fun plinking, my go-to is a Ruger 10/22. I also carry a Smith & Wesson M&P Shield since I have my CPL. Reloading for my deer rifle has become a great hobby, and it’s really boosted my shooting consistency. I usually shoot on family land or at a little club close to home.

Well, it looks like you made some pretty good choices on your weaponry. Can't EVER go wrong with a .30-06. I have 1 centerfire 'Hunting' rifle for larger game and that's .30-06 Weatherby Mark V Accumark. Although I seldom hunt with it, (since I mostly bow hunt or use my muzzle loader during firearm season in lower Michigan). But I still have it if needed. And of course, a 12 ga shotgun is a must. Remington 11-87 here. 26" light contour vent-rib Remchoke barrel. I too, have an M&P Shield 9mm (along with a few other pistols). And a few various .22LR & .17HMR small for game/varmint rifles. I don't reload, though. That's pretty much all I need for what I do.

I watched a video on the Meateater app where a fella gave his 4 worst hunting cartridges. He had the 30-06 as one of them. That blew me away. I mean, regardless if you don't like it, it's probably one of the most popular hunting cartridges. At one point, it was how all other cartridges were judged. Certainly many more have been introduced and with young hunters and women becoming more into the hunting scene, less recoil oriented cartridges are popular today. It's just really hard to imagine the 30-06 being on any list of bad choices for hunting. Super versatile and a true American icon cartridge. I don't shoot one anymore because I prefer others but it's easy to recognize its popularity over the years. Welcome to the forum.

^^^Exactly^^^ Within average hunting distances (say out to 300 yards or so for North American game) if you can't kill it with a .30-06 you're not going to kill it with any other caliber either.
