Are thread protectors just for show?

Do thread protectors serve a real purpose, or are they just for show?

I'm gonna go out on a ledge here and say that they actually do protect the threads when the muzzle device is off. So yeah, they serve a purpose as well as giving your firearm a cleaner look when shooting with your muzzle device removed.
