I've been doing some research on 9mm self-defense ammo, and I'm curious about everyone’s favorites. What hollow points have you found to be the most reliable? Any specific experiences you can share?

Over the years, I've tried a ton of different options, but when it comes to 9mm self-defense, I always find myself reaching for Federal HST 124gr. It’s consistently reliable, expands well, and feeds smoothly in every pistol I’ve run it through.

If I had to choose one based on how well it performs and how reliable it is, I’d definitely go with Federal HST. People rave about its expansion and penetration, plus how it handles barriers. And it feeds smoothly in a ton of different platforms, which is a huge plus.

Ive switched from HP ammo to Underwood (or Lehigh) Penetrator +P in my EDC, 9mm and .380. Monolithic and it causes massive wound channel and goes through almost anything. No expansion to slow it down.

I have found confidence in Speer gold dots. They are bonded so they hold up and hold together. I do not have real world experience with any of them besides using them for hunting, and they perform very well on game animals. Reliable consistent expansion but no actual “self defense” experience. I’ve used and tested xtp hollow points and critical defense they expand but not like I would hope and the xtp come part as they are not bonded like the gold dots. Gold dots will expand almost identical every time. The only downfall is speed is a little anemic when it comes to the power level of their loads.
