Planning a trip to visit family and trying to figure out the best route. I’d like to bring a firearm with me, but going through New York State makes that tricky. I've heard mixed things about transporting guns through New York, and avoiding it adds a ridiculous amount of drive time. I’m weighing my options—thoughts from anyone who's faced this dilemma? What route did you take and how did it go? I’m open to suggestions or any tips you might have.

Are you asking about concealed carry or carrying a firearm in a locked case ? They are completely different and NY allows the later just not the Concealed option. Sorry never traveled thru NY but aware they are not a reciprocal state. We honor their CPL, they just do not ours

Not looking to Conceal - just pass thru with access if I stop for gas or food.

I always have my AR vehicle gun cased in whatever I'm driving but also carry concealed as well. Both legal here but you'd have to check the states you'd be driving thru. They may allow a cased rifle in the back seat of the vehicle your driving as Michigan does. I'm LE so it's not as much an issue for me in state but my credentials are useless out of state where gun laws are concerned in some of the deep blue states. Reciprocity exists in most states but not all.

If it’s not a state that allows conceal carry from your home state (New York) just have your weapon in a case with ammo separate and you’ll be fine.
