I’m considering picking up something from the used rack instead of spending a ton on a brand new one. But I’ve never done this before and I really don’t want to get burned. What kind of criteria do yall use when you’re looking for pre-owned firearms? Is there a mental checklist I should be following?

How familiar are you with firearms?

Depends- people who purchase retail then go to sell it used end up asking for more than purchasing new at wholesale. Rule of thumb is used is discounted 40-50% off wholesale because dealers/ shops offer 1/2 wholesale or less. Search gunbroker sold prices not listed prices to Learn values. Then learn what to inspect on a gun to determine wear or damage- crown, rifling wear, chamber condition etc. once educated start shopping or just go out buy something blind and learn the hard way like most people

I am of the thought that if it is an expensive rifle it should be of good condition or the owner would have replaced the barrel if it inaccurate. If It's an inexpensive rifle it has the possibility of being inaccurate. The cost of a new barrel is negated by the cost and quality of the original action. A person could trade it in on a different rifle or sell it outright and purchase a new rifle. Just my 2 cents worth.
