Have you ever taken a really long road trip?

As I get ready for a long drive, I'm curious about what others have experienced. Where did you go, and was it a trip worth taking?

I once drove from the Midwest to the Rockies once. Those long stretches of road clear your head in a way flying never can..I would totally do it again.

I guess it depends on what you call "really long"...

I've made 13 trips over the ALCAN hi-way, two of them on my motorcycle, but that's only 9,000 miles round trip...

I drove from Port Huron, MI to Mesa, AZ in June 2015. Was taking my old "daily commuter" Mercury Mariner out to our son. Got off and drove on Route 66 several times and stopped by the "corner in Winslow Arizona". Long stretches of nothing in New Mexico -- just desert and a view for miles.

The longest (and worst) trip I ever took was in 1968 when I was 10 years old. For some reason my dad thought it was a good idea to stick me on the back of a Honda 305 Super Hawk, a scooter by todays standard, and take a 2-day trip to my grandparent's place in the outskirts of Herman, Mo. from Livonia, Mi. He welded together a 'luggage rack' that mounted to the back of the bike. Between the vibration of the bike and my back leaning against the unpadded steel rack, not a real comfortable ride to say the least.

Every year I drive from southern Michigan to central Florida and then 6 months later I reverse it. I learned early not to drive through Atlanta so I take a detour to the west through Rome. One of these years I'm going to detour to the east instead. I often get off I75 and take some back roads when the mood strikes me. For the most part it's a pleasant trip. My grandfather used to do it in the 50's before the Interstates, and I would like to duplicate his route some day. He had an old Dodge pickup with a homemade 'camper' made from plywood. A college friend and I once did Michigan to Miami nonstop in our youth, mostly on two lane roads. Did the return trip nonstop also, with 3 girls we picked up hitchhiking at the FL-Ga border. Drove to Wichita from Michigan for my first job after college, and then from Wichita to Los Angeles 15 years later for my second job.
