I am or have been a member of two ranges that are year round. South Kent Sportsmans Club in Allegan county, and Marksmanship Training Center in Lake City. Both are top level ranges offering lots of benefits.
You mentioned waterfowl hunting and handgun, be aware of the rule regarding carrying only "one gun afield" in waterfowl hunting. It is ridiculous to think the DNR would use it against you when carrying your self defense pistol while hunting Ducks, but they can! Just saying.

That “one gun afield” law really does seem outdated but as you said, it’s still there. I wouldn’t expect it to be a big deal on most days but I’m not keen on being the one who finds out the hard way with the wrong officer at the wrong time. It’s one of those situations where having the knowledge beforehand allows you to make a better choice instead of being caught off guard later.
